IU Donates ₩300 Million on Her Birthday: Inside K-pop's Most Generous Tradition

IU Turns Her Birthday Into a Day of Giving — Again

On the occasion of her birthday this past Saturday, Korean singer-actress IU donated 300 million won (approximately $200,160 USD) to multiple charitable organizations, her agency Edam Entertainment confirmed. The donation was made under the name ‘IUaena’ — a combination of ‘IU’ and her official fan club name, ‘Uaena’ — a heartfelt gesture that unites artist and fans in the spirit of giving.

Where the Money Goes

The 300 million won was distributed across five organizations: 100 million won to Asan Medical Center in Seoul, and 50 million won each to four local charity groups. According to Edam Entertainment, the funds at Asan Medical Center will be used to support patients facing financial difficulties in accessing medical care. The remaining donations are directed toward providing educational and cultural programs for children across Korea.

A Tradition of Generosity

IU’s birthday donations have become one of the most beloved traditions in Korean entertainment. Each year, on or around her birthday, IU makes large charitable contributions — a practice she has maintained consistently throughout her career. The tradition has also inspired her fanbase: Uaena fans routinely organize their own charitable projects to celebrate IU’s birthday, creating a culture of giving that extends well beyond the artist herself.

Over the years, IU has donated to causes ranging from children’s welfare and education to elderly support and disaster relief. Her philanthropy has earned her a reputation not just as one of Korea’s greatest artists, but as one of its most quietly impactful citizens.

IU in 2026: Drama, Music & More

Beyond her charitable giving, IU is one of the most anticipated figures in Korean entertainment this year. She is set to star in the MBC romantic comedy drama ‘Perfect Crown,’ set in an alternate constitutional monarchy, alongside Byeon Woo-seok — one of the most highly anticipated terrestrial dramas of 2026. Her dual identity as a singer-actress continues to make her one of the most powerful figures in the Hallyu wave.
